Theological error in Israel has resulted in the people having a false hope and confidence in God’s protection which has contributed to their sinful behaviour. In Amos 5:18 – 6:14 Amos speaks to these false confidences. He challenges the popular understanding that Israel’s (Mosaic) covenant with the Lord assured them of God’s presence, that their military and economic prosperity confirmed it, and that the day of the Lord would be one of salvation only.1 He rebukes Israel for a form of godliness that has no power and reminds them that obedience is better than sacrifice.2
