  2. Exposition

What is the main message of this hymn?

Amos 9:5–6 (ESV)

5 The Lord GOD of hosts, he who touches the earth and it melts, and all who dwell in it mourn, and all of it rises like the Nile, and sinks again, like the Nile of Egypt;

The title of the hymn stresses the sovereignty of the Lord, his covenant relationship with Israel, and his power through leadership of the heavenly hosts and the army of Israel. The main aim of the hymn is to convey the idea that God is present everywhere, thus there is no place to hide from him. Everything that he promised (Amos 9:1–4) he can do.
