1. Amos 3:12 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does it mean that the people of Israel will be rescued “with the corner of a couch and part of a bed?”

Amos 3:12 (ESV)

12 Thus says the LORD: “As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the people of Israel who dwell in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part of a bed.

The idea is not that people sitting on the bed or couch will be rescued but that only a corner of the bed and part of a couch will remain. When invasion strikes, the rich will perish quickly even as they lay on their ornate beds in leisure and luxury.1 The great capital city and its population will be so destroyed that only fragments of its once proud wealth will be findable.2
