Sermon outline for Amos 3

Amos 3:1–15 (ESV)

1 Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, O people of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:

  1. Introduction

Briefly remind church members of your previous sermon from Amos 1:3 – 2:16.

    • Six oracles of judgment against the nations

    • Israel feel good; they like hearing about their enemies being destroyed.

    • Eventually the prophet focuses his attention on Israel itself.

The Lord knows about all the horrible things which Israel have done. They are going to be destroyed.

    • Destruction by the hand of the Lord is a big surprise to Israel.

  2. Privilege will not save

    • Explain the likely response which Israel had to Amos’s message and what they must have thought about him.

    • Explain the big surprise in Amos 3:1–2.

  3. Amos is not crazy

    • Explain the significance of the questions that Amos asks to the Israelites; why does he do so?

    • Explain the response that the Lord expects from his people to Amos’s message.

  4. Judgment is certain

    • Explain how the final verses of the chapter confirm the certainty of judgment.

    • Explain how this corresponds with the surprise of Amos 3:1–2.

  5. Warnings of love

    • Explain why we need these repeated warnings in Scripture.

    • Explain how the New Testament also contains several warnings.

    • Apply: What is your response to the warnings of Scripture? Do you ignore them? Do you listen?

    • Encourage: There is salvation from God’s wrath for all those who repent of their sins and trust in Jesus Christ for forgiveness.
