Six oracles of judgment against the nations
Israel feel good; they like hearing about their enemies being destroyed.
Eventually the prophet focuses his attention on Israel itself.
The Lord knows about all the horrible things which Israel have done. They are going to be destroyed.
Destruction by the hand of the Lord is a big surprise to Israel.
Privilege will not save
Explain the likely response which Israel had to Amos’s message and what they must have thought about him.
Explain the big surprise in Amos 3:1–2.
Amos is not crazy
Explain the significance of the questions that Amos asks to the Israelites; why does he do so?
Explain the response that the Lord expects from his people to Amos’s message.
Judgment is certain
Explain how the final verses of the chapter confirm the certainty of judgment.
Explain how this corresponds with the surprise of Amos 3:1–2.
Warnings of love
Explain why we need these repeated warnings in Scripture.
Explain how the New Testament also contains several warnings.
Apply: What is your response to the warnings of Scripture? Do you ignore them? Do you listen?
Encourage: There is salvation from God’s wrath for all those who repent of their sins and trust in Jesus Christ for forgiveness.
