What is the significance of the reference to Egypt?

Amos 4:10 (ESV)

10 “I sent among you a pestilence after the manner of Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword, and carried away your horses, and I made the stench of your camp go up into your nostrils; yet you did not return to me,”declares the LORD.

It is somewhat ironic that the Lord did the same things to Israel that he had done to the Egyptians (Exodus 9:1–7). Surely this was to warn the people that they had become like the Egyptians in their pagan practices and lack of social conscience.1
