What does it mean for the Word to have been in the beginning?
John 1:1 (ESV)
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
In the beginning immediately reminds the reader of Genesis 1:1; it points to a time before creation.1 John is claiming that the Word was present at the beginning of all things. He is thus outside of creation and time. The Word does not have a beginning but he was present in the beginning.2
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
