What does it mean for the Word to have been "with" God?

John 1:1 (ESV)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The phrase with translates a Greek preposition that indicates place or accompaniment but also disposition and orientation. This establishes relationship and distinguishes the Word from God (the Father).1 The Word is thus a person who can be distinguished from God and who enjoys a personal relationship with him.2
