It is good to compare what this passage says about Enoch with what other passages in Scripture says about him. Except for Genesis 5:1–32 and Hebrews 11:1–40, Jude is also important. See Jude 1:14–16. Firstly, Jude says that Enoch is the seventh in the line of the offspring of the woman (Genesis 3:15). The number seven means a highlight, a culmination, because he walked so close to God. (Compare with Genesis 4:17–24 Lamech as the culmination of evil in the line of Satan’s offspring). Secondly, we read that Enoch was a prophet who told his wicked generation about God’s judgement. People do not like to hear that. They want to kill God’s prophets who speak about God’s judgment. When you realize that, you understand why in Hebrews 11:6 it is written that Enoch was not “found”: people looked for him to kill him, but they did not find him. He was with the Lord. What an encouraging message!
5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.
