The story of Enoch is found in Genesis 5 (specifically Genesis 5:18 and Genesis 5:21–24) and also mentioned in Hebrews 11:5. He was a godly man who walked with God before being taken away by him without experiencing death. Speculating on this anomaly, a large interpretive tradition developed in Israel concerning Enoch and three books were written that bear his name: 1, 2, and 3 Enoch. The words quoted by Jude are found in 1 Enoch 1:9. The mention of Enoch being the seventh from Adam is to highlight his prominence, the number seven being significant in Jewish thought and the Scriptures.
