1. Hebrews 13:7 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why are the leaders of the church mentioned at the end of this letter to the Hebrews?

Hebrews 13:7 (ESV)

7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.

Hebrews 13:7 and Hebrews 13:17 are about the leaders of the church. In a time of persecution (as the Hebrews experienced), it is important to have leaders, who are guides, to lead the church through the difficulties. In Hebrews 13:7 the main task of a leader in the church is mentioned: speak the word of God (compare Acts 6:1–7). That is what the first leaders of the church did. They were called by Jesus. The apostles and elders who died, stayed faithful during difficult times. For example, think of the martyrdom of Stephen (Acts 6:1 – 8:40).
