Gilead is an important area mentioned several times in the Old Testament. Though Gad receives all the towns of Gilead, Manasseh also receives half of Gilead (Joshua 13:31). Gilead was a fertile region at high elevation with abundant forests (Jeremiah 22:6; Jeremiah 50:19) and olives, grains, and vines flourishing on the western slopes. Especially known for a healing balm used for medicinal purposes (Jeremiah 8:22; Jeremiah 46:11) and spices, balm, and myrrh (Genesis 37:25). The Aroer given to Gad was different from the Aroer in the south given to Reuben.
24 Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans.
