The way in which the Corinthian believers had suddenly become somebodies
in God’s eyes is now briefly explained. They were given the position of being in Christ Jesus.
Christ has become their wisdom. The content of this wisdom is described in three words: righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. Each of these words calls to mind a specific image of the gospel.
Righteousness
is a legal term. As the judge of the world, God has declared believers to be righteous, based on the perfect obedience of Christ. Sanctification
is a term that reminds one of temple service. Those who are in Christ are holy, dedicated to God. Redemption
means liberation (e.g., that of a slave or prisoner) through the payment of a ransom.
