The problem with the Corinthians’ gatherings is that they do not exhibit Christian unity. On the contrary: they are an occasion for divisions
(literally, splits
or tears
).
Paul has probably been informed of this problem by Chloe’s people (see 1 Corinthians 1:11). He cautiously states that he believes their reports in part.
He clearly does not wish to accuse all the church members of guilt in this regard.
This is not the first time that we hear of disunity among the Corinthians. Early in the letter (1 Corinthians 1:10–13) Paul expressed his concern at divisions which were caused by an unhealthy focus on human leaders. In this section, he will address divisions that are motivated by socio-economic differences (see 1 Corinthians 11:22).
