Why was Edom so prideful?

Obadiah 1:3 (ESV)

3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, “Who will bring me down to the ground?”

Pride is defined in the dictionary as a high or inordinate opinion of one’s own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority.1 Edom thinks it is untouchable because of its geographical area. It is located on the top of mountains, in between rocks and cliffs where it is easy to create a fortress and very difficult for an enemy army to attack successfully. As a result, Edom can ask the question, Who will bring me down to the ground? That is, Who is strong enough to come and attack me? Edom thought it could attack Judah with no consequence because of Edom's well-defended home.2
