It appears as if Edom was famous for its wise men. Teman, a city in Edom, was apparently the home of Job’s wise friend Eliphaz (Job 2:11).1 Perhaps Edom was well-known for its wisdom because it was located on the edge of a caravan route and was able to make good business decisions and shrewd diplomatic alliances.2
8 Will I not on that day, declares the LORD, destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of Mount Esau?
