Obadiah 1:1–21 (ESV)

1 The vision of Obadiah.

Obadiah’s metaphor of drinking the cup (Obadiah 1:16) is taken up in the New Testament. Jesus drank the cup of divine wrath in full (John 18:11) when he paid for the sins of all God’s people through his death. Now the cup of the new covenant is drunk by all who have experienced his saving grace (Luke 22:20; 1 Corinthians 11:25–28). When we celebrate communion, we drink the cup of the new covenant trusting that the blood of Christ has completely paid for all our sins.
