Ephraim is the only tribe west of the Jordan for which no city lists are preserved, apart from the mention of Bethel and Jericho. Their southern boundary corresponds to the northern boundary of Benjamin (Joshua 18:12–13). Bethel would become one of the shrines set up by King Jeroboam in his secession from Jerusalem and the temple (1 Kings 12:1–33). As a result it was eventually associated with false worship (Amos 4:4).
The only other significant detail from the list is the mention of people groups. The Archites were listed as one of the original groups of inhabitants of Canaan (Genesis 10:17). It seems as if they were not driven from the land because one of King David’s close advisors, Hushai, was an Archite (2 Samuel 15:32; 2 Samuel 16:16). The Japhletites are unknown, apart from being descendants of Asher (1 Chronicles 7:30–33).1
1 The allotment of the people of Joseph went from the Jordan by Jericho, east of the waters of Jericho, into the wilderness, going up from Jericho into the hill country to Bethel.
