The way in which Paul describes the lives of Christ’s disciples reveals much about his understanding of the motivation and power behind Christian obedience. Rather than simply imposing his own authority or threatening punishment, he directs them to a lifestyle that is worthy of God. The word worthy
is generally associated with things that are highly valued. When something is said to be worthy of
another person or thing, there is an implied comparison: the thing which is called worthy has a value or worth that accords with the person or thing that it is worthy of.1 In this case, the convert’s lifestyle is expected to have a character that is in harmony with the character and being of God.
12 we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
