This statement, a manner worthy of God,
shows us how, in calling new believers to a lifestyle of obedience, Paul did not merely focus their attention on a code of behaviour which they were obligated to follow. While there certainly were behavioural norms that had to be observed (e.g., 1 Thessalonians 4:1–12), it was important for the new believers to understand that the standard of behaviour was defined by the being of God himself. For comparison, we may note the Levitical command to be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy
(Leviticus 19:2). This perspective makes Christian ethics relational rather than just behavioural.
12 we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
