This verse is a variation on the fifth commandment. When we serve and honour those in authority over us with loving submission, we will increasingly be blessed and nurtured in return. If we treat those over us as hard and unreasonable taskmasters, we should then read Luke 19:11–27, especially Luke 19:22–24, to see what we can expect to experience in response.
