Why did Joshua assemble all the tribes at Shechem?

Joshua 24:1 (ESV)

1 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God.

Shechem was also the site of an earlier covenant renewal ceremony (Joshua 8:30–35). The fact that it is specified in the text suggests that a separate gathering took place (from the gathering in Joshua 23:1–16) though including the same attendees.1 The site was probably chosen for two reasons. Firstly, this was the place where the Lord confirmed his promise of land and descendants to Abram (Genesis 12:6–7). Secondly, this was also the place where Jacob had buried the gods which he and his wives brought from Haran (Genesis 35:2–4).
