The poor in spirit is anyone who receives the gospel as a child, sitting at the feet of the Lord, listening to him. The poor in spirit has an attitude that says, “Teach us, guide us, show us the words of God, the kingdom of heaven; give us your Holy Spirit.” The poor in spirit does not long for wealth (Matthew 6:19–24, 25–34), but for righteousness and mercy.
