The descriptive word “great” reminds us that “Babylon” as a force of anti-God culture and human self-sufficiency is a formidable force, one that has enormous influence among humanity. Think of God’s own assessment of Babel: “Nothing they propose to do will now be impossible for them” (Genesis 11:6).
