What is meant by “the commandments of God”?

Revelation 14:12 (ESV)

12 Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.

The term refers to any and every instruction the Lord has given in the course of human history. In context, that includes the three imperatives the first angel voiced in Revelation 14:7: “Fear God and give him glory…and worship him.” In the face of the pressures described in the previous chapter (see Revelation 13:3–4, Revelation 13:13–17) to worship the dragon (and so fear him and give him glory), the phrase in this sentence designates those who consciously withstood the dragon’s false worship.
