Daniel suggests that after the ten-day trial period, their appearances be compared to the others who eat the royal food set before them. It can, then, be seen whether eating only plant foods and drinking only water has any adverse effects. Daniel and his friends want to eat clean food out of reverence for the Lord. They trust in him blessing them.
13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king’s food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.”
