1. Psalm 3:7 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is significant about the expression “Arise, O LORD”?

Psalm 3:7 (ESV)

7 Arise, O LORD! Save me, O my God! For you strike all my enemies on the cheek; you break the teeth of the wicked.

Anyone who trusts the Lord knows that he will give victory. In this verse God is called into action: Arise, Lord. That sounds a bit cheeky. But that is not the intention. It is an expression of confidence. It brings in memory the history of God with his people in the desert. Every time they departed, Moses said the same: Lord, arise (see Numbers 10:35–36).

When God rises, he takes action for his people. The Bible says the same about Jesus in heaven. Normally he sits. But he rises and Stephen, the first martyr of the church sees the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God (Acts 7:56). He stands up for his persecuted church. Standing up can also mean that God will judge the enemies of his people.
