Simon Peter was one of the three members in Jesus’ inner-circle (Mark 5:37; Mark 9:2; Matthew 17:1–3). He was a fisherman by trade (Matthew 4:18; Mark 1:16; Luke 5:1–7; John 21:3) but after his time with Christ and being sent as an apostle, he became a preacher (Acts 2:14–40), miracle worker (Acts 3:1–10, Acts 9:32–42), prophet (Acts 5:1–11), and author (1 Peter 1:1; 2 Peter 1:1). Originally called Simon, he was renamed by Jesus as Peter (Mark 3:16) which means rock
or stone.
In the New Testament he is referred to as Simeon (Acts 15:14), the son of John
(John 1:42; John 21:15–17), the son of Jonah
or Simon Bar-Jonah
(Matthew 16:17), and Cephas (1 Corinthians 1:12; Galatians 1:18). Cephas is the Aramaic translation of Peter.
