2 Peter 1–3 was written to assure the church of the certainty of God’s eschatological promises in light of the skepticism shown by the heretics. Specifically he has in mind promises about Christ’s return (2 Peter 3:4), the new heaven and earth (2 Peter 3:13) as well as the believers’ entrance into an eternal kingdom (2 Peter 1:11). These promises may not have been realized but that does not mean they will not be fulfilled (2 Peter 3:9). God is trustworthy and he will do what he said.1
4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
