Becoming partakers of the divine nature is not about humans becoming divine but rather about moral transformation, sharing in some characteristics of God,1 specifically the moral excellence that belongs to him.2 In 2 Peter 1:5–7 he will then go on to describe the character exhibited by those who are partakers of the divine nature.
4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
