Daniel 4:32–33 (ESV)

32 and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.”

The Lord shows that he is God because what he said happens immediately. Nebuchadnezzar becomes insane and is cast out. After some time, the people who see him has to look at him in horror. He eats grass like the animals, his hair grows extremely long, and his nails look like claws. Is this still a human being? Is this the man who used to be the mighty king of Babylon? How has this man been humbled by the Lord!

The ingenious builder—the man who seemed to be building man’s kingdom in an amazing way—finds himself completely out of touch with the world of culture. The Lord shows through a few words from his mouth that the kingdom of man is a kingdom built on sand.

The Lord deserves all the glory. His Kingdom, the kingdom of Christ, is the true eternal kingdom. Jesus Christ is the only person who deserves divine honour. He is God and man. He deserves that honour as the King of God’s eternal kingdom. That praise and honour is brought to him in heaven (see e.g., Revelation 4:1–11 and Revelation 5:1–14). Jesus Christ is the eternal King, and no one else. Before he is born Mary sings of the Saviour to be born, He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate (Luke 1:51–52).

Through the punishment that he receives the Lord brings Nebuchadnezzar to the acknowledgment that it is God who rules supreme.
