What is godliness?

2 Peter 1:6 (ESV)

6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,

Godliness, duty, or piety is the appropriate respect and reverence toward God and those associated with him.1 It is to live in a holy manner, a life that pleases God (1 Timothy 2:2; 1 Timothy 3:16; 1 Timothy 4:7–8; 1 Timothy 6:3, 1 Timothy 6:5–6, 1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 3:5; Titus 1:1). This manner of living is to mark the believer as he sets his hope on the return of Christ (2 Peter 3:11–13), he must show loyalty to God and the Christian community. In doing this he will act differently from the heretics who deny the Lord (2 Peter 2:1) abandoning his way (2 Peter 2:2, 2 Peter 2:18–22).2
