Calling and election refers to God’s decision to choose to save a people for himself and his glory. Salvation is the fruit of divine initiative (Ephesians 1:3–5). God’s love is the root cause of election, regardless of the character, accomplishments, merits, or virtue of the one called (Romans 5:7–8; 2 Timothy 1:9).1 Peter refers to election as an encouragement for pursuing godly moral conduct. If you have been chosen by God, then the result will be the exercise of the virtues outlined in 2 Peter 1:5–7.2 A godly life is the evidence of forgiveness and a foundation for assurance that you truly belong to God.3
10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.
