What does Jesus mean with "follow me"?

Mark 8:34 (ESV)

34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Whereas self-denial and taking up a cross refer to a commitment to recognizing Jesus’ authority and a willingness to suffer, the term follow me focuses on practical obedience. True faith is not simply about knowing what Jesus has said and a commitment to him; it involves following him. We must not only hear Jesus’ words; we must do what he says.

With these words, Jesus is calling his disciples to follow him on a road of suffering before glory. He is the Son of Man who is going to suffer, die, and rise again. Those who follow him must expect the same challenges and treatment that he received.
