How exactly were the prophets inspired by God?

2 Peter 1:21 (ESV)

21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

In Acts 27:17 the same Greek word translated here as carried along is used to describe the actions of a wind on a ship. This provides us with a helpful way of understanding the inspiration of Scripture. God moved men by his Spirit and yet it was still men being moved. The men inspired to write Scripture were overtaken by God such that their words can be considered divine. Yet they were not robots. They still wrote and spoke in a unique way such that each author’s style is somewhat different.
