From Jesus’ teaching we see that marriage is a lifelong joining of two people and not simply a social contract. In marriage, God is the one who joins two people together. Therefore, it is always wrong when this joining breaks apart. Marriage is meant to be permanent. This also suggests that since God has united a husband and wife together, a marriage cannot simply be broken by the decision of a husband to divorce.1
