Although God is not mentioned, this growth can only be the result of his blessing. God often promises or commands fruitfulness and growth as part of a blessing (Genesis 1:28; Genesis 9:1; Genesis 9:17; Genesis 22:17; Genesis 26:4; Genesis 35:9–11; Leviticus 26:9; Deuteronomy 6:3) and, elsewhere, the growth of Israel is clearly attributed to God (Deuteronomy 1:10; Nehemiah 9:23).1 However, God also uses means to accomplish his works. In this case, the land of Egypt (and the land of Goshen in particular, Genesis 47:6, Genesis 47:11) has long been known for its fertility.2
7 But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.
