In Zephaniah 1:4–6 there are five objects of God’s judgment for their evil practices. These objects are each indicated by the prophet’s use of the sign of the direct object in Hebrew (את), as follows:

  • the remnant of Baal

  • the name of the idolatrous priests along with the priests

  • those who bow down on the roofs

  • those who bow down and swear to the Lord yet swear by Milcom

  • those who have turned back from following the Lord

All of these objects corrupted Israel’s worship in a variety of ways.1
