What is so drastic about the cutting off of the remnant of Baal?

Zephaniah 1:4 (ESV)

4 “I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off from this place the remnant of Baal and the name of the idolatrous priests along with the priests,

The clause, I will cut off from this place the remnant of Baal, points up how drastic the Lord's action would be: not even a remnant will be left. It was a characteristic of the Lord’s covenant chastisement of his people that he did not totally exterminate them, but left a remnant. Had it not been for this, their fate would have been no different from that of Sodom and Gomorrah…. For those who worship Baal there will be no remnant spared.1
