Zephaniah 1:2–6 (ESV)

2 “I will utterly sweep away everything from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.

The coming judgment of the Lord is going to be an awful, dangerous day. He will gather into his holy presence all idolaters, all who worship the created things, and cast them into outer darkness for all eternity. What chance do idolaters like us have? In order for a sinner to stand before a sinless holy God, we need an advocate, one who would go before us as our substitute, a sacrifice for us, one who would undergo these judgments of the Lord on our behalf. That was Christ. We read in 2 Corinthians 5:21, For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Jesus in his death on the cross was cut off in the judgment of God. Jesus was making a safe place for us to hide by taking the wrath of God against all our sin and injustice onto his own back…. Either we rely on our own wealth, power, connections, and goodness for the. Day when we will all stand trembling before God., or we must trust in Christ and his power, goodness, connections as our only hope in life and death.

All who seek refuge in Christ will on that day of judgment not be cast out, swept away, or cut off from the Lord's blessed presence, but gathered into the presence of the Lord, covered by the righteousness of Christ. Thus, Zephaniah 1:2–6 calls us to flee to Christ as the only refuge from judgment.

Furthermore, this Christ arose from the death, triumphant over death. And he sent his Spirit into our hearts, so that we would begin to worship the Lord alone. Thus, there is also the call of Scripture to wage war against all of the idols of our hearts, in the strength of the Lord. Sin and Baalism have lost dominion over the believer, who by God’s grace has been turned into a person who now worships the true God.
