1. Zephaniah 1:6 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does the verb “turn back” often convey?

Zephaniah 1:6 (ESV)

6 those who have turned back from following the LORD, who do not seek the LORD or inquire of him.”

The verb often has negative overtones. It is used at times to denote apostasy (e.g., Isaiah 42:17; Isaiah 50:5; Isaiah 59:13 (2x); Jeremiah 38:22; Jeremiah 46:5; Psalm 44:9; Psalm 78:57). Only here and in Isaiah 59:13 is the verb combined with “from following.” These two passages have in common a context of judgment in turning away from the Lord.1
