The women listed by name were the most prominent among a large group of women who travelled with Jesus and his disciples, accompanying him to Jerusalem.1 From Luke 8:1–3 we learn that some of these women had financial resources that they used to help Jesus in his work of ministry. Where Jesus’ disciples have fled and are nowhere to be found (Mark 14:50), these women continue to follow Jesus, albeit from a distance.
40 There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
