Who was the serpent?

Genesis 3:1 (ESV)

1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

In Genesis 3:1–24, the serpent is a symbol of antigod. He is the adversary of God and humanity, elsewhere called Satan (Job 1:6; Revelation 12:3, Revelation 7:1 – 19:21).
