Why were the women afraid?

Mark 16:8 (ESV)

8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. [Some of the earliest manuscripts do not include 16:9 20.]

The absence of Jesus’ body and the presence of an angelic messenger would have led to amazement on the part of the woman. Having just heard that their friend has been raised from the dead, they are afraid because they realize that Jesus is powerful. They are afraid because they have just met an angel.
