No pity while persecuted

Amos 1:11–12 (ESV)

11 Thus says the LORD: “For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and cast off all pity, and his anger tore perpetually, and he kept his wrath forever.

Our God does not take it lightly when those who could come to the aid of his suffering people fail to do so—and instead turn a blind eye or even take delight in seeing God’s people treated badly! For just one example, think of what happens to so many of God’s people when they are persecuted: they go to the police for help—only to find out that the police do nothing to help them or even join in with those persecuting them…Our God will at times allow his people to find no pity from others for a while. He has his reasons for that. From our perspective it might indeed appear to be a long while. But let us understand this: he sees; he takes note—and he will yet act! Eventually Edom too was completely destroyed!
