  2. Exposition

What does it mean for the heavens to pass away with a roar?

2 Peter 3:10 (ESV)

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

The idea that the heavens (and earth)1 will one day be destroyed or disappear is a basic expectation found in a number of passages (Matthew 5:18, Matthew 24:35; Mark 13:31; Luke 16:17; Luke 21:33; Revelation 20:11; Revelation 21:1; Isaiah 34:4; Isaiah 51:6).2 The fact that this will happen with a roar could refer to the voice of God thundering from heaven,3 the noise of the heavens passing away,4 or the suddenness with which the event will take place.
