What is the significance of the seventh angel's pouring the contents of his bowl into the air?

Revelation 16:17 (ESV)

17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, “It is done!”

We modern readers think of “air” as the substance we breathe. Though John’s readers certainly breathed air, the term “air” simply described the space above the ground. Luke uses the term in Acts 22:23 to describe where the frustrated crowds were flinging dust (see also Exodus 9:8; Revelation 9:2). Of significance for us is Paul’s statement that the “air” was the space inhabited by the (invisible) devil and his demons (Ephesians 2:2; see also Ephesians 3:10; Ephesians 6:12). The Lord Jesus had earlier shown John that Satan was thrown out of heaven “down to the earth,” and so were his angels (= demons; see Revelation 12:9). Yet in John’s further description of what Satan and his demons were doing on earth (Revelation 12:1 – 13:18), John certainly did not characterize Satan as earthbound as non-angelic creatures are. On the contrary, in Revelation 16:13–14 John had associated “spirits” with the dragon and the beasts. So, whereas previous angels poured their bowls of divine wrath on aspects of humanity’s home, the seventh angel must pour out his bowl on the habitat of the exiled devil and his demons.
