It seems that Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus were an official delegation, sent by the Corinthians to deliver their letter to Paul and to discuss church matters with him. In this way they have made up for [the Corinthians’] absence
and brought great joy to Paul’s heart. From these words it is evident that Paul deeply cared for the Corinthian church and that he was always longing to receive news from them.
If Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus are not the same as Chloe’s people
(1 Corinthians 1:11), it is possible that these men brought some good news about the Corinthian church which balanced the bad reports that Paul had received from Chloe’s people. Whether it was through good news or simply through their Christian love, they refreshed
Paul’s spirit (cf. 2 Corinthians 7:13).
Without giving a further explanation, Paul states that Stephanas’ household also refreshed the Corinthians themselves. Perhaps he has in mind the future return of Stephanas’ household to Corinth. Upon arriving there they will deliver Paul’s letter and share the spiritual blessings that they have received from him on their visit.
Not only Stephanas and his household, but also all such men
should be recognized for who they are: servants of Christ and his church, and therefore worthy of being respected and followed.
18 for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such people.
