Sermon Outline for 2 Peter 3:14-18

2 Peter 3:14–18 (ESV)

14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.

  • Introduction

2 Peter has drawn our attention to God’s promises as they are focused on Jesus Christ. He is our Lord and Saviour, two terms that have been used to describe him throughout the letter (2 Peter 1:1–2, 2 Peter 1:8, 2 Peter 1:11) that we find being repeated once again at the very end (2 Peter 3:18).

These promises about Christ are promises that influence our lives today even as they concern the future. We look forward to the coming of a perfect kingdom. The future shapes our present.

  • Power of promises for present change

    • Explain why Peter says we must aim to be spotless, blameless, and at peace with Christ.

    • How do the promises of what Christ will do in the future empower us to live godly lives today?

    • Apply: give practical examples of what it will look like to pursue godliness in the different areas of our lives and also why we can do so.

  • Promises tied to the Bible

    • Explain how God’s promises come to us through his Word.

    • Comment on Paul’s letters and the formation of the New Testament Canon.

    • Explain why we are all tempted to distort what Scripture says.

    • Apply: what should we do when we read something in the Bible that we do not like?

  • Guarding and growing

    • Explain what it means to guard (doctrine) and grow (practical godliness).

    • Apply: what will it mean for us to be on our guard against false doctrine?

    • Apply: how can we make sure that we are growing as Christians and support each other in this?

  • Conclusion

Peter has written his letter to encourage us to pursue godly living in light of who Jesus is (Lord and Saviour) and what that means for the future (destruction of sinners, salvation for Christian believers). Let us not be deceived by those who claim there is no judgment and we can live as we please. Let us not be deceived by those who say that we can have blessing and prosperity now rather than waiting for Christ’s return. Instead, let us be diligent in studying God’s Word, submitting to his teaching and doing what it says for his glory and our good.
