The list is arranged in the chronological order of the accounts in the book. At the start of the Othniel narrative, the author recounts that Israel “served the Baals and the Asheroth” (Judges 3:7), and in turn, the Baals and the Ashtaroth appear first in the list in Judges 10:6. Next are mentioned the gods of Syria, corresponding to Cushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia (i.e., Syria) in the Othniel account. Then the “gods of Sidon” are mentioned, but do not appear elsewhere in the book. Afterward, the list in Judges 10:6 partially corresponds to the order of the oppressors in the book: the gods of Moab (Eglon king of Moab in the Ehud account), the gods of Ammon (in the Jephthah account), and the gods of the Philistines (in the Samson account).
6 The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook the LORD and did not serve him.
