The reference to the table is not to the table at the gates of the inner court (Ezekiel 40:39) nor to the table of incense or the table upon which the shewbread was placed. The reference is to the altar (Ezekiel 44:16). Why Malachi refers to the altar as a table is unclear. The altar is seldom described as a table, to prevent the idea that sacrifices were food for God, as though he relied upon the gifts of man for his sustenance, as the pagans believed, and as the Israelites sometimes thought (Psalm 50:13).
7 By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ By saying that the LORD’s table may be despised.
